➤Do you like the cup of coffee in the morning? I do, and as I write, theres a steaming cup of coffee beside me.
Not only is coffee still a popular drink to help start the day, but more and more evidence shows that there are many health benefits that can also be in agreement with it.
If you are a moderate coffee consumer, you risk less than:
Type 2 diabetes
Even decaffeinated coffee can help in the case of type 2 diabetes.
In one major study, more than 193,000 people were screened, and those who drank an average of 6-7 cups of coffee were 35% less likely to be diagnosed with diabetes.
Those who drank 4-6 cups a day have a 28% chance of developing type 2 diabetes.
Sex, age, weight - none of that mattered; the risk was further reduced.
In a larger study, researchers in Australia looked at nearly half a million people - and found a 7% drop in diabetes risk for each cup of extra coffee per day!
In fact, drinking decaffeinated coffee or black tea lowered the risk of almost the same amounts.
What about stroke and heart disease?
What evidence exists to show that coffee can reduce these risks?
In men, the risk of a heart attack and stroke was reduced when they were regular coffee drinkers.
For women, only the risk of stroke has been reduced.
One possible reason for this gender difference could be the increased risk of heart attacks that women have after menopause because of their decreased estrogen levels.
With regard to Parkinsons disease, AD and dementia, the key protective ingredient of coffee appears to be caffeine.
A scientific study examined nearly 1,500 people over a 20-year period.
People who drank 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day saw the risk of dementia and AD was 65% less compared to those who did not drink coffee or had less than 3 cups per day!
Coffee appears to protect the liver from cirrhosis and even from liver cancer. It also appears to protect against gallstones.
Coffee is well known to help improve concentration and can improve your exercise capacity.
What is coffee plus caffeine that can help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, strokes, Parkinsons disease, dementia and AD?
Well, at least some of this has to do with high levels of antioxidants found in coffee.
Antioxidants are chemicals in foods, especially superfoods that remove free radicals in the body. Free radicals occur as a result of the daily biochemical reactions common in our bodies, but are highly reactive and can damage parts of cells. Your body has natural ways to eliminate free radicals, but this can certainly help the body if it is taking extra antioxidants either from super foods or from supplements.
In fact, coffee is one of the best sources of antioxidants that is readily available.
Science continues to know how these antioxidants can reduce all of the above diseases, but we know they do and there are many studies to prove it. And we know that coffee is a rich antioxidant course and there are definite health benefits if you drink 3-5 cups a day.
So keep this coffee going and stop feeling guilty.
